The Nizwa & Jabal al-Akhdar tour is an essential Omani experience, offering a comprehensive look at the Sultanate’s cultural heart and its most dramatic mountain scenery.
The first part of the tour focuses on Nizwa, historically known as the ‘Pearl of Islam.’ You will visit the Nizwa Fort, renowned for its massive circular tower and ingenious defensive mechanisms, which stands as a testament to the Yaruba dynasty’s power. Adjacent to the fort is the bustling Nizwa Souq, a traditional marketplace famous for its intricate silver jewelry (especially the Omani dagger, or Khanjar), pottery, livestock (on Fridays), and local produce, including dates and Halwa (traditional Omani sweet).
The journey continues toward the mountains, stopping first at Birkat al-Mouz (Banana Pool), a picturesque ruin of an old mud-brick village surrounded by lush date palm plantations. Here, you’ll witness the UNESCO-listed Falaj Al Khatmayn, an ancient, gravity-fed irrigation system that sustains the oasis.
Finally, the tour ascends to Jabal al-Akhdar (requires a 4×4 vehicle). On the Saiq Plateau, you will hike or walk through the celebrated terraced farms of villages like Al Ayn and Ash Shirayjah, where fruits such as pomegranates, apricots, and roses are grown. The climax is the visit to Diana’s Point, a famous canyon viewpoint offering a spectacular panoramic vista.
